Different parks, different kinds of day

People searching Bali Zoo vs Bali Safari usually want one answer: which park should take the single free day. The honest reply is that they are built differently. Bali Safari is organized around a ride through naturalistic habitats aboard a specially designed safari tram, with a 4x4 Jeep Safari as an upgrade.4

Bali Zoo is a walking park. It lists a visit of about 3 hours, over 500 rare and exotic animals, a free Jungle Encounter, presentations and a water play area.8,6,9 The feeding programs and timed sessions are where its day gets its shape.

The parks are separate businesses with their own sites, so none of the figures below is interchangeable. Where a number exists on only one side, this guide says so, and it never fills the gap with a guess.

Where each park sits

Bali Zoo's address is Jl. Raya Singapadu, Singapadu, Kec. Sukawati, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80582.12 Bali Safari's booking page gives Jl. Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra, Serongga, Kec. Gianyar, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80551.13

Both are in Gianyar Regency, which means a single base can serve either. Bali Safari describes itself as only 30 km from the international airport.2 For the zoo, our getting-there guide has drive times from the main resort areas.

Because the two lie on different roads, do not plan to see both on one day. Each takes a half day at least, and the opening hours below leave no room for a relaxed second park. Bali Safari vs Bali Zoo is a close call on hours but not on style.

Hours and cutoffs

Bali Zoo opens from 09:00 to 17:00, with a last check-in at 16:00.1 Bali Safari's booking page lists 09:00 to 17:00 for every day of the week, Sunday through Saturday.2

The safari also runs a Night Safari, which its price list describes as a Night Safari Journey with a walk-in safari, a welcome drink and an African fire dance.14 The zoo's late program is Behind Closed Doors, from 4 to 6 PM, with a last check-in at 15:00.11

Neither park's page says that every show runs every day. The safari states that performances depend on schedule, weather and animal condition, and that the Bali Agung show is unavailable on Monday.7

Bali Safari prints its prices for foreign tourists in rupiah. The Jungle Hopper Legend is IDR 750.000 for an adult and IDR 620.000 for a child, and the Night Safari is IDR 1.200.000 and IDR 980.000.3,14

What a ticket includes

A zoo admission ticket includes the Jungle Encounter, animal and bird presentations, the Jungle Splash water play area and insurance.6 A Jungle Hopper Legend ticket includes 1 Safari Journey by tram, animal, tiger and elephant presentations and the Bali Agung cultural performance.3

The safari says it has hundreds of animals from over 100 species, while the zoo describes over 500 animals.20,8 The two counts use different units, so do not read them as a contest.

The safari lists feeding sessions with elephants, giraffes, meerkats and rabbits, and the zoo lists feeding of deer, elephants, lions and tigers under guidance.4,5 Both are a draw for children, and both are best confirmed on the day.

Notes for the trip out

A park-day checklist

Decide3

  • Who in the group wants to ride, and who wants to walk
  • The cancellation line on the page you pay on
  • Which ticket includes the shows you want

Bring3

  • Sunblock and a brimmed hat
  • Water and a change of clothes for the splash area
  • Rupiah for food and small extras

Timing2

  • Arrive before the last check-in.
  • Allow time for the drive to Gianyar

The animals you are likely to meet

The zoo's own animal list includes elephants, orangutans, lions, tigers, komodo dragons, lemurs, meerkats, gibbons, zebras, wallabies and ostriches, among many others.21 Its Jungle Encounter adds a raccoon, a skunk, a fennec fox, a bearcat and a range of reptiles.9

Bali Safari says it keeps hundreds of animals from over 100 species, and it names Bali starling, Sumatran elephant and Sumatran tiger as animals in its conservation and release programs.20 Its tram carries you past larger enclosures than a walking route can offer.

The practical difference is pace. At the zoo you choose where to linger, so a child who loves lemurs can stay at the lemurs. On a tram the route sets the pace, which suits groups that tire easily and frustrates keen photographers.

Shows, presentations and the weather

Both parks build part of the day around presentations. The zoo includes animal and bird presentations in its admission, and the safari includes animal, tiger and elephant presentations plus the Bali Agung cultural performance on its Jungle Hopper Legend ticket.6,3

Schedules bend to conditions. The safari says performances follow a schedule and depend on weather and on animal condition, and the zoo warns that heavy rain can pause its elephant mud activity because river levels rise.7,22

In the wet season, which Indonesia's tourism ministry places between November and March, a flexible plan matters more than a cheap ticket.23 Carry a light rain layer, ask on arrival which presentations are running, and keep the afternoon free in case a morning show moves.

Children, strollers and accessibility

Bali Safari defines an infant as below 3 years old and a child as between 3 and 12, and its booking page says a child below 3 is free.17,7 Strollers and wheelchairs can be rented daily at its Main Terminal, and the park says it is wheelchair friendly.18

Bali Zoo lists wheelchair access, a shuttle bus inside the park, toilets and a restaurant, and its mud activity has a 120 cm minimum height for children, who then pay the adult price.24,16

For small children the tram is a convenience at the safari, and the zoo's shorter walking distances and water play are its answer. Neither page gives a stroller policy for the zoo, so ask before you bring one.

Refunds and booking terms

The safari's Jungle Hopper ticket is non-refundable with no reschedule, and same-day booking is available.7 The zoo's general admission ticket is also described as non-refundable.6

The booking platform's zoo listings show a different term for reservations made through it: free cancellation up to 24 hours before, with reserve now and pay later.

As always, read the cancellation line of the page you pay on. A ticket bought from a park is a park contract, and a reservation bought from a platform follows the platform's terms.

A fair way to choose

Pick the safari if the idea of a guided ride through large enclosures, with big shows, appeals more than a walk. Its own page frames the day around the Safari Journey and the presentations.4

Pick the zoo if you want hands-on programs: the orangutan breakfast, capybara and elephant sessions and an after-hours visit are all on its package list.25,26,27,11 It also suits a shorter, cheaper visit, since its entrance ticket starts lower.

If you cannot decide, let the child or the oldest traveler choose. Both parks are good days, and the cheaper mistake is to book the one whose cancellation terms leave you room to change your mind.
