Bali Zoo stands in Singapadu, a village in Sukawati district, which belongs to Gianyar Regency.1 That matters more than it sounds, since a zoo with this name could just as easily sit in Denpasar or on the tourist coast. It does not. The grounds lie inland in Gianyar, closer to Ubud than to the beaches, so a visit is an outing in its own right rather than something you squeeze between two beach stops.
Wikipedia dates the opening to 2002 and calls it the first zoo to open in Bali.7 The zoo's own ticket page uses a similar line and describes the park as Bali's first zoological park.3 You do not need to treat either wording as a ranking; what is useful is that the place is an established attraction with a printed address, a phone line and a ticket system rather than a roadside stop.
The map block above pins the grounds and the places around them. By road the zoo sits about 12.0 km from Ubud and about 13.9 km from Sanur on OpenStreetMap routing.8,9 The south coast is farther. If you are still deciding where to sleep or how to arrive, the pages on getting there and on staying nearby carry the full distance table. Treat the figures as straight road distances without traffic; a morning on the main roads of southern Bali can take longer than the arithmetic suggests.

Prices are not listed here because the zoo shows them only at checkout; times are the zoo's own, as printed on its package pages.
The zoo's own ticket page lists a general admission that includes the Jungle Encounter, the animal and bird presentations, the Jungle Splash water play area and insurance.10 It also says the ticket is non-refundable.10 That last line is the one to read before you pay: a general ticket bought direct is not one you can cancel for your money back, so settle the date and the group size first and keep the voucher where you can find it on the morning.
The Jungle Encounter is described by the zoo as a free part of the visit, with a raccoon, a skunk, a fennec fox, a bearcat and a range of exotic reptiles.11 The zoo also says guests can feed and pet some tame animals, such as deer and elephants, and feed lions and tigers under the guidance of a trained team.12 Treat the feeding lines as the zoo's own description of what is offered, not as a promise for every hour of the day.
For comfort the ticket page lists wheelchair access, toilets, a restaurant, a parking area, an ATM, a praying room, wifi, a shuttle bus inside the zoo and a souvenir shop.13 A shuttle inside the grounds is a hint that the park is spread out, so wear shoes you can walk in and carry water. The restaurant is useful when you want a break from the heat without leaving the grounds. Allow time for the shuttle and the queues for the shows, and decide in advance where you will eat so the middle of the day does not slip away.

Two numbers circulate and both come from sources worth naming. The zoo's ticket page speaks of over 500 rare and exotic animals.3 Wikipedia says the zoo has over 600 animals from 60 species.4 The hotel next door repeats the over-600 figure in its own words.30 The figures come from different sources and different dates, so read them as a range rather than a headcount. If a particular number matters to you, say a specific species for a child's wish list, ask the zoo directly before you travel instead of relying on a total. The Bali Zoo animals you can name from the zoo's own list include elephants, orangutans, lions, tigers and lemurs.31
What helps more than the total is knowing which animals the zoo itself names. Its animal filter on the website lists elephants, orangutans, lions, tigers, Komodo dragons, lemurs, meerkats and zebras, among others.32 The zoo also says it is home to 14 elephants.33 If a particular species is the reason for your trip, ask the zoo by phone or email before you go, using the contact details on its own site.
Visitor numbers add context. Wikipedia reports that in February 2024 the zoo averaged 800 to 1,000 visitors a day on weekdays and up to 2,000 on holidays, with about 70 percent domestic and 30 percent foreign visitors.34 The gap between those two figures makes weekdays the quieter choice, and an early start helps on any day. Arriving close to opening time also leaves the cooler hours for the walking and keeps the afternoon free for the shows and a long lunch.

Beyond the ticket the zoo sells timed experiences, and its package page groups them as single, combo and stay packages, with a hotel return transfer option shown on the listed breakfast, brunch, mud and explorer products.44 The durations differ a lot, from the Capybara Connection at about 1 hour to Elephant Mud Fun at about 7 hours.14,18 The table and the bar chart below put them side by side.
The orangutan breakfast is the one this site is built around. The zoo lists it at about 5 hours with a last check-in at 08:30, and the breakfast itself runs from 08:00 to 10:00.6,5 Its package includes the admission ticket, a full breakfast, the Jungle Encounter, the animal and bird presentations, the Jungle Splash water play area and insurance.19 In other words the breakfast already contains a normal visit, so you do not buy a second ticket on top.
Other extras are shorter. Brunch with Capybara is a session from 09:30 to 11:00, Elephant Explorer lasts about 1.5 hours, and Behind Closed Doors runs from 4 to 6 PM with a last check-in at 15:00.15,16,17 A half-day explorer with lunch and transfers lists about 5 hours.27 Pick one extra and leave room for the rest of the park rather than stacking three. A short session also fits well into a general visit if you only want one special encounter and would rather keep the rest of the day flexible.
The breakfast day by the clock
06:30
Jimbaran, Kuta, Seminyak and Nusa Dua pick-ups start at 06:30 on the listing.
07:00
Sanur and Ubud hotels are collected half an hour later, at 07:00.
08:00 to 10:00
The zoo lists the orangutan breakfast window as 08:00 to 10:00.5
10:00 to 12:00
The listing gives the zoo tour and animal shows two hours after breakfast.
14:00
The return transfer to your hotel leaves at 14:00 on the listing.
The zoo publishes its own downloadable map of the grounds on its website, next to the address.43 Download it before you arrive, because inside a large park a printed or saved map saves the argument about which path to take. The map block on this page is different: it shows where the zoo sits in Bali, not where the enclosures are. Use the zoo's file for the enclosures, and use ours to see what lies on the road to the gate and what lies beyond it. A Bali Zoo map is worth saving before you go, since the zoo publishes its own downloadable one.43
Two places lie close enough to pair with a zoo morning. The Sukawati Art Market is about 4.1 km away by road and Bali Bird Park about 3.3 km.41,42 Those figures come from a routing engine on OpenStreetMap data with no traffic, so they are a guide to distance, not a promise about time. Both are separate attractions with their own tickets and opening hours, so check them before you commit.
If your day starts with the breakfast tour, the afternoon is already spoken for: the listing's schedule has the zoo tour and animal shows from 10:00 to 12:00 and the return transfer at 14:00. That leaves little room for a market, so keep those stops for another day or for a self-driven visit. If you do plan a second stop, look up its hours first, since each of those places keeps its own schedule and its own entrance terms.

Ahead of the visit
Not every traveler is comfortable with zoos, and Bali Zoo has been reviewed by animal-welfare groups. Wikipedia reports that World Animal Protection assessed the zoos of Bali in 2018 and again in 2023 and, in its summary, concluded that Bali Zoo engaged in abusive practices such as elephant riding and allowing visitors to touch animals.45 That is a secondhand summary of a report, so read the organization's own reports if the topic matters to you.
The same article records that a 45-year-old Sumatran elephant named Molly died in December 2024 after being swept away by a strong river current.46 The zoo's own mud-activity page notes that heavy rain can raise river levels and make it unsafe for the elephants to cross, so the activity is paused in such weather.47 The elephant topics have their own site in this network; this page only flags them.
On the zoo's side, its support page describes a Chainsaw Buyback Program run with ASRI and says Bali Zoo has taken part since 2019.48 A fair way to decide is to read both sides, look at what interactions the experience you are booking actually involves, and choose the format you feel comfortable with. Zoos differ in how close visitors get to the animals, and that is a fair question to put to any operator, including the ones on this site. The breakfast listing describes its animal contact as guided by trained staff.
The GetYourGuide listing for the breakfast is priced from $43 and lets you cancel for free during the 24 hours before the start; payment can wait until later. The listing carries its own rating from past guests, and the price is a starting price that the booking page confirms for your date and party. That differs from the zoo's own non-refundable tickets.10 The listing names English and Indonesian as its guide languages.
The listing's schedule is clear: hotel pick-up at 06:30 from Jimbaran, Kuta, Seminyak and Nusa Dua, 07:00 from Sanur and Ubud, breakfast from 08:00 to 10:00, the zoo tour and animal shows from 10:00 to 12:00 and a return transfer at 14:00. Pick-up covers Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Ubud and Sanur, and an address outside them may carry an extra charge paid in cash. Because the pick-up window depends on your area, enter your hotel at checkout before you settle on an early start.
If you would rather drive yourself, the zoo's own breakfast package lists the same 08:00 to 10:00 window and a last check-in at 08:30.5,6 Either way you are at the zoo before the general crowd. The breakfast window opens at 08:00 while the zoo opens at 09:00, so the early start is the main practical difference between them.5,2 The page on tickets and hours covers the admission side, and the page on getting there covers the roads.
